Summer Days

"We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge or gallantry would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution is designed only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate for any other."
-John Adams

Happy Fourth of July!

We feel so very blessed to live in this country that values the liberty of all. We have boundless gratitude to those who have fought and died to protect that liberty. God bless America!

Here is some of what we've been up to this week:

We had a fun baby shower for a friend who is having a girl, after having four boys. It was so much fun to get together with friends and laugh, eat cupcakes, and talk about babies.

Our town throws a HUGE celebration on the Fourth of July, called Freedom Festival. We went to several events they had, including the very impressive Colonial Days. We wondered how those actors stayed cool in those heavy clothes and boots. We can't wait for the fireworks tonight! We've been reading lots of great books about our founding fathers, the Declaration of Independence, and the Star Spangled Banner.

One of the Freedom Festival events is a 10K run. I did it!! My family came to cheer me on at the end. They're terrific! My time was 1:13:10. Ohh yeahhh.

Crossing the Rubicon

Narmer had Egypt
King Minos had Crete
Shamshi-Adad had the world
For a time.

So did Cyrus, Alexander, Augustus and Caesar
Their conquests and triumphs we
Read and admire.
Many have come with their hopes
And aspire
To greatness and glory and fame.

I felt the 'umph' in triumph today
I conned the quest in conquest.
I crossed the Rubicon,
Half of Provo as well, (not quite)
A better time to claim.

We turned the corner
Our purpose in sight
We ignored the pain
And roared with might!
Forward, onward, victorious flight!
Now 36:02 will be by my name.

Ode to the Pavement

Thanks so much ladies! I couldn't have done it with out you.
I'm in a sea of huffing people,
huffing and puffing along.
My heart is pounding,
pounding, pounding
a masochistic song.

The cold wind bites my bright red cheeks.
I won't be able to walk for weeks.
I'm sure my friends think I'm a freak
As I pound away the crazy beat
Of my masochistic song.

The finish line is up head.
I think my legs have turned to lead.
My lungs begin to mutiny
As I'm carried by the huffing sea
And the song of my protesting heart.

In a few steps the song has changed.
"Victory" now is its name.
Triumphantly I can reclaim
My head and lungs and grateful heart.

I've also gained something new
strength, endurance, a T-shirt too,
And bragging rights. I now can say
I wasn't last in today's 5K.

Woo Hoo!
